The Element of Colour - Living Coral

An organization called The Pantone Color Institute advises the fashion, product, interior and packaging design industries on the use of colour in design.

In doing so, they choose a colour of the year to reflect economic, social, environmental and worldwide trends.

They have been taking on this role for many years now.

This year they chose the colour…

Living Coral (Pantone16-1546).

Pantone Color Institute describes it as ”an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge”.

“Vibrant, yet mellow Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment,” said Pantone.

Most people are not at all affected by such pronouncements; but what you might find interesting is why Pantone chose Living Coral for 2019.

“In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy…

“Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.”

Executive Director of The Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman states, “Color is an equalizing lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities and this is particularly true for Living Coral.  With consumers craving human interacting and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial PANTONE Living Coral hit a responsive chord.”

“Living Coral emits the desired, familiar, and energizing aspects of color found in nature.

“In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent color mesmerizes the eye and mind. Lying at the center of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, PANTONE Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.”

For our mental health let’s focus on the beauty in life and nature and the affinity we naturally have for positive human interactions.

Colour used in an artwork is one of the seven elements of art.  All colours come from three primary ones - red, yellow and blue, plus black and white tints.  Living Coral is a mix of almost equal parts magenta and yellow and a tiny hint of black.  No blue.

Like all things with art and design you have choices.  Go full on with Living Coral and immerse yourself in the colour, choosing artwork that is primarily Living Coral or furniture and bedding in the trendy colour.

To me the purpose for art is to provide the viewer enjoyment, happiness and contentment.  I am drawn to art imagery that intrigues me or makes me smile.

I really love artworks that incorporate this fresh lively coral colour.

It’s like a mini vacation for the 1 to 5 minutes (or more, depending…) I may spend viewing a particular work of art.

Art has the ability to reinvigorate you.
