Have you ever walked into an art gallery, expecting to be struck by the perfect art you've been searching for, only to leave feeling disappointed?
If so, you're not alone. I have observed this happening throughout my 14 years matching clients to art (and art to clients š). But I've also witnessed that magical moment when someone finds 'the one' - their eyes light up, their energy shifts, smiling and some get emotional.
So many people approach art shopping with the same unrealistic expectations that occur with dating ā hoping to find "the one" on our first or fifth night out.
But here's the truth: finding your perfect artwork is a journey, not a sprint. Just like finding your soulmate, it requires patience, self-reflection, and yes, some trial and error.
Imagine walking into a new social club on a random Thursday night, convinced you'll meet your future spouse. I am not a relationship expert, but that sounds absurd, right? Yet, we often enter galleries with the same unrealistic hope of an instant art connection.
It's time to adjust expectations and approach art shopping with the same thoughtfulness we (hopefully) bring to our romantic lives. So, how do we set ourselves up for art-shopping success?
Here are a few tips:
Ā
1.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Know Thyself (Or Learn To): If you're unsure about your art preferences, that's okay! Start with self-discovery. Visit museums, browse online galleries, flip through art books. Pay attention to what catches your eye and what leaves you cold. It's like networking and connecting with several people to figure out your "type."
Ā
2.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Educate Yourself: Just as you might read relationship books or consider advice columns, dive into the art world. Learn about different styles, art techniques sources where to buy. The more you know, the more confident you'll be in your choices.
Ā
3.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Define Your Red Flags: Just as you might have a list of dating red flags, it's okay to have art deal-breakers or red flags. Maybe you dislike neon colours, or perhaps you canāt wrap your head around abstract art. Knowing what you don't want is just as important as knowing what you do.
Ā
4.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Keep an Open Mind: While it's good to know your preferences, remember that sometimes love (and art) can surprise you. Don't dismiss a piece just because it's not your usual "type."
Ā
5.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Take Your Time: Rush into buying art, and you might end up with the equivalent of regrettable outcomes. Give yourself time to think about a piece or artist.
Ā
6.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Do Your Homework: Research artists, styles, and galleries. The more you know, the better equipped you'll be to find art that truly resonates with you.
Ā
7.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Trust Your Feelings: When you find the right piece, you'll know. It will speak to you in a way that others don't. Trust that feeling ā it's your art intuition talking!
Ā
8.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Don't Settle: Just like in dating, settling for art that doesn't truly speak to you will leave you longing for something more. That "good enough" piece will never satisfy the craving for the art you really desire. It's better to wait for the right match than to fill your walls with regrets or place holders.
Ā
Let me share a real success story: A busy doctor and family had been living with, ignoring, regretting, and annoyed by empty walls and placeholder artwork for over 10 years. Through my Do-It-Together Program she found through a Google search, we transformed the home by framing pieces she had been storing in the basement and finding two perfect originals for her main floor ā a photograph and an abstract painting that truly spoke to her soul. We even deployed some of the familyās photography in an artful way.
While this home was transformed with art relatively quickly (a few weeks), it was successful because she knew what she wanted and was ready to make decisions.
Just like in dating, hunting for the right art that makes your soul sing is about building relationships, but in the art world. Finding the right art connection starts with putting yourself out there.
Here's how:
Ā
1.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Make the First Move: Reach out via phone/email or visit studios and galleries in person.
2.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Be Clear About Your Intentions: Share your timeline and desired level of support.
3.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Trust Your Instincts: If you feel pressured, hassled, ignored, or unsupported, it's okay to try another gallery or studio until you find the right fit.
4.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Keep Communication Open: Ask questions and maintain an open mind.
5.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Understand the Investment: Be prepared for a fee if you need extensive support. The more work youāve done on yourself results in less time required by the art agent.
6.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Listen to Your Heart: Pay attention to your emotional responses to pieces shown to you ā they'll guide your art agent closer to your perfect match.
Remember, just as in relationships, you might end up falling for something completely different from what you initially imagined. The right art agent will help you discover pieces that satisfy your soul; more intuitive than what your mind thinks you want!
Ā
Finding your art soulmate is a process. It might not happen on your first gallery visit, or even your third. But with patience and strategy, self-awareness, and an open heart (and wallet! Letās be realistic about that.), you'll find the perfect piece that makes your soul sing.
Ā
If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, consider working with an art agent. Think of them as your personal matchmaker in the art world. They can help speed up the process, introduce you to artists and styles you might not have discovered on your own, and guide you towards finding that perfect artwork.

Ā
Happy art hunting!
